greetings viewers Eric car guy here back again with another repair video for you this is the first one we’re going to do with our 1993 acura vigor however the information in this video I believe will transfer to many many other makes and models I’m just going to basically go through the methods that I use in order to diagnose and repair a water leak in a vehicle this happens from time to time there’s a lot of contributing factors normally you don’t have water leaks normally you don’t see them normally there’s some outside force that causes the water leak to happen there’s been a rare occasion where I’ve found water leaks on brand new vehicles and those were difficult to track down I can tell you but I’m just going to cover some of the things I’ve seen and some of the methods that I use in order to diagnose and also verify the repair of any water leaks that you might have in your vehicle and they come in all shapes and sizes but the point I was trying to make earlier where water leaks usually have some sort of outside cause there’s two main things that I’ve seen one the installation of a windshield if you’ve just had a windshield installed any not-too-distant past and you now have a water leak or sometimes even an air leak that windshield a suspect sometimes the sealer doesn’t get in where it’s supposed to get to what I can tell you in those situations is sometimes good luck getting the windshield company to come back and fix that for you but that’s that’s another issue altogether but what I’m what I’d really like to say is like if you do have a water leak and you’ve recently had work done such as a such as a windshield put in that would be the first place that I would look the other thing to look out for is collision damage if you’ve been in a collision and even after the repair especially after the and you have a water leak that collision damage is the first place that I would look in order to find the location or the source of that water leak so in those two instances if you find you have water leaks look there will cover like I said the methods that I use to help narrow down where these water leaks come from and I’ll talk a little bit about some of those experiences along the way but this acura vigor when I bought it had a pretty sizable water leak in the trunk now I didn’t have time to shoot well I didn’t take the time to shoot the video when I first got it I really just wanted to get the water out of the vehicle ASAP so I removed some plugs that were in the back there then I was in the trunk that I’ll show you and also removed everything in the trunk and left it open so that it could dry out I wanted to make sure that it was dry but will still go through the process of diagnosing it but just know that I’ve already done some preliminary work in order to get to where we are when we get inside the trunk here let’s have a look okay I’ve opened the trunk so we can get a look inside but there’s something I want you to notice what did I just get through mentioning was that if there’s collision damage it would be one of the first places to look and you’ll note it looks like my rear bumper has been tagged you can clearly see it so it’s been pushed in a little bit how much and if that’s a problem well we’re not really sure yet but once again it’s collision damage and we have a leak in the trunk so that’s what we want to look let’s get a closer look in there here’s the trunk with the spare tire removed the jacks been removed the cover for the spare tire has been removed and also these two they were just rubber plugs that fit into those two areas I would have loved it if they would have put one here down at the lowest point in the center that wasn’t the case in fact what I ended up doing was after removing these plugs I ended up jacking up the car on one side so that the water would drain down those holes now some people suggested I posted pictures of this before I did this repair but some people suggested one just drill a hole in the past I’ve done that with some cars that were basically not worth saving but if you want to save your vehicle I don’t recommend drilling those holes the main reason is there’s still paint here if that drilled through here that would basically leave exposed metal exposed metal water leak you got rust and won’t be long and that car will be really rusty enough most of this here is all from my jack that it basically disintegrated something to note is that little peg there is not supposed to be there that’s actually the hold-down for the spare tire that I’m going to have to heat and get up out of there it’s so rusted in place now that may not necessarily be because of the water leak that’s just because well it kind of happens with Honda’s the other thing that I did is I left the trunk open so that things could dry out because I did that I removed the bulb from the trunk

light here now you could also disconnect the negative battery cable I could just as easily have done that so if you have a trunk light and you have a leak in the trunk such as I had here you want to disable any of those lights you’re all just going to run your battery down now with any water leaks a good visual inspection is a good place to start in the case of water leaks with the trunk there’s the seal that runs around the outside of the trunk this was damaged say up here and allowing water to pass down in because water will cascade down the back of this window here and go into this gutter and basically funnel down and out so we want to look in any of these areas that that where water can come in and inspecting these seals is a good place to start you can see on this seal that it’s pretty much intact now there was a bunch of pine needles that were jammed down in here there’s still a great number of them jammed down in there I tried to get rid of them as as quickly as possible I’m going to vacuum everything out when I’m done pine needles are actually some of the worst things on a vehicle’s finish pine needles are acidic especially when they get wet so if they turn into like this wet muck they can really wreak havoc so that’s another thing I wanted to take care of immediately when I got the water out is I just wanted to get rid of these pine needles what I did was I took out as many as I could I took it outside then it’s a compressed air and blew in this area to try to knock a lot of that loose but as you can see we really don’t have any issues with this seal here I’m going to admit I kind of think I already know what the problem is here and this actually happens quite a bit with Honda’s there are gaskets behind these taillight housings that go bad they get dry rotted and as I said the water just gutters right down here and right into these taillight housings so we’re going to verify that I’m going to test to see if that is indeed the case and if it is the case where we place those taillight gaskets there’s a gasket goes between this and the body of the vehicle we’ll replace those and go on our way so if if you have a Honda and it’s not just these Acura Vickers but if you have a Honda that has a leak in the trunk and you don’t see any other damage around the outside check around the tail light housings you might find that it’s leaking in that area if so you can replace those gaskets and fix that leak so I know I’ve kind of tipped my hand a little bit but this is what we’ll do is and this this is basically what you’ve got to do with any water leak you got to start removing stuff so that you can identify the source of the leak so I’m going to be removing all of this interior trim here in order to get a better view from behind this taillight now obviously your vehicle is going to vary as far as removing interior trim and that sort of thing but that’s what you need to do you need to get to the source you need to try to get down to bare metal in the suspected area of the leak and with this bigger we’re going to remove these covers back here to try to you know gain access to viewing the back of the taillight assemblies where the suspected leak is there’s a few plastic body Clips here that need to be removed a few reluctant plastic body clips and this tool basically does this if I could find one of these I’ll post the link in the description for you in addition to that we need to remove or at least pull back this outer seal here which I can just do like this these just pop right out so don’t be scared just pull up on now that those are out the rest of this is just clipped in now the reason I pulled up on this because you see there’s clips on the outside and one of those is still down in there but there’s those clips on the outside that hold this piece into place so that’s why you want to pull up when you’re removing that okay here’s the back of our taillight housing which is what I suspect is leaking but this is what we want we want to get down to the bare metal in any place where we suspect a leak and any time with water leaks you want to start high and then work your way down and the other side same deal so we’re going to check both sides when we do this but we’re down to bare metal before I do that I’m going to just push

this weather seal back into place now we’re ready to do some testing welcome to the back of the shop we’re gonna get a chance to get back here to much but back here is where I have my rather high-tech instrument that I’ll be using in order to help diagnose the water leak in the trunk of my bigger yeah that’s right it’s a garden hose at the dealership we had a was actually a nice little rig it was a showerhead that was on the end of a long pole that we could just position over the car and just to run continuously and sometimes some water leaks are like that some water leaks take a while before they actually start to manifest and show themselves I’m hoping that’s not the case with this but the principle is pretty simple all we’re going to do is close the trunk I’m going to position a camera inside so that you can see where the water is coming from now if you don’t have a camera which you probably don’t in this situation you might want to stuff your friend in the trunk I’ve done it or if there’s a pass-through or something like that that can work but basically with water leaks you probably going to need two people you’ll need one person in order to implement the water and another person in order to observe whether or not the water is coming inside that’s what was kind of nice about that showerhead thing is that you could be by yourself positioned a showerhead where you wanted it where you suspect that the leak was and just let that thing run so that that was rather helpful but if you don’t have that luxury you can duct tape the host wherever you like to get it to where you need it to be like I said the principle is rather simple pretty much put water where you suspect the leak is and observe to see if you’re correct it’s kind of straightforward it sounds straightforward to say but by the time you get done ripping apart the interior to try to get to things I think you’ll find that in practice it might be a little more difficult than you might suspect so we’re going to get a camera down in here we’re going to start running some water on the outside we’ll see what we get now given my limitations with the camera I’m going to do this one side at a time we’ll start with the left side check that side then we’ll move to the right side we’re just gonna run it all along the suspected area I’m also going to try around this antenna because that’s another possibility alright let’s open it up and have a look so far this sides looking kind of dry I don’t see well actually I do see a little bit it might have been that antenna let’s pull that back and have a look here’s a little bit of what I’m talking about you can see some water came in over here in this area and what’s right behind it is the power antenna so I’m going to pull this back and get a look in that area and see if it’s that so even though I suspected these gaskets here and it looks like it might just be that antenna yeah you can see it already going down well it’s worse than I thought actually because it’s this area here that’s all completely rotted away is where it’s coming in and over here as well so that tells us exactly where this water is coming in so the damage on this body is worse than we thought but there’s the source of our water leak right there looks like it’s just pouring in there and there and on the other side it’s this seam right here so this bumper would have to come off and we’d have to do some body work in order to repair that so like I said if there’s collision damage look there but it looks like this

is all rotted away enough to where that’s what’s causing our issue all right because I knew you’d be asking I also pulled back the other side to find equally bad news around this this is the sunroof drain we’re going to talk about those in a minute they have these at each of the four corners but this one here is also pretty bad looks like it might be bad enough to where some water could have leaked in at one time or that’s just the rust that’s coming down either way it’s something we’ll have to look into but without a doubt this over here is our culprit and unfortunately the only way to fix this is pretty much to rebuild this whole back half here I mean this is this is all gone I don’t know I got nothing this is a vent for the the trunk is what that is and there’s there’s no metal or anything there for it to go into that’s all completely gone so that piece would have to be replaced or something fabricated in its place in order to get us by which is probably what’s going to happen I’m not intent on restoring this vehicle to factory because I mean bodywork is labor-intensive but as we know the vigor already needs some bodywork that’s for almost looks like something hit it causing a leak their collision damage I think is what started it and then what finished it was sitting under a pine tree for who knows how many years before I got a hold of it but I had actually already purchased the taillight gaskets thinking that that was the issue since that is a common issue with Honda’s however that was not the case so anyway well I’m going to keep those taillight gaskets because if I do end up doing this bodywork I’ll probably replace them anyway knowing that there are known problems so I don’t really feel like I’ve lost out other than I missed the diagnosis there but let’s go over a couple of other things that might leak and so to give you a general idea of where to look so that we can really round this video out is a general water leak video not just what’s wrong with my vigor well as long as we’re here in the trunk and I did mention the antenna that’s where the antenna attaches to the inside the body this is a motorized antenna and there’s also usually a drain tube down at the bottom yeah somewhere down there there’s normally a drain tube at the bottom of an antenna like this because water will get in there and it needs a place to drain out if that drain comes off during the replacement or some other you know something happens to either clog or cause that drain not to be connected that can cause water leak in the trunk I don’t see too many power antennas these days so it’s not as much of an issue now but back in the day quote-unquote when they were making tons of these things this is a very distinct possibility that you have to deal with with these cars another thing I had mentioned was sunroof drains there’s normally for one at each corner there’s that little hole that’s there there’s one of those at each corner of the tray and there’s one back down in this area because though the sunroof Assembly actually encompasses the whole part of this roof here those can we can already see some debris down in here those can become clogged up and if they do there’s always going to be water intrusion around the sunroof no matter what but what the way they deal with that is the gutter it away and they gutter it down those holes now say if you get some debris or something down inside here that can clog up those holes and if those holes get clogged up then it’ll fill up and eventually what you have is sometimes when you go around a turn all of a sudden a bunch of water will come inside the car very unpleasant that’s because it’s all puddle up in this area so check the sunroof drains those holes in each one of those corners to see if there’s an issue there and if there is then try and unclog it and then recheck it now there’s where this empties out where this goes is there’s a tube that runs from here all the way down this pillar and down out behind the mud flap in the front here so a good way to check it is to run your water up here and then check to see if you see water coming out down at one of the corners at least on this vehicle like different vehicles they might drain them in other places and same is true for back here there’s a tube that comes off runs down this pillar and as you saw in the trunk right by that area it’ll come out behind that mud flat back there so that if there’s if there’s if you want to check the drains which is a great idea just run some water and I’ve even left the sunroof open like this and then what run water directly into this area so that I could check the operation of each drain individually and that’s it that’s a good

thing to do now to do an actual sunroof prepare is going to be fun because you have to remove the entire headliner to get everything down to gain access through all your drains and everything that’s up there so you’re going to have to remove the whole headliner in order to access those drains and perform that repair and you may even have to remove that the entire tray for the sunroof if that’s the case so I can see that’s that’s not fun and sometimes sometimes it’s extremely difficult to get that sunroof tray out in fact I would recommend like removing the front seats would make it a little bit easier because many times at the factory it goes in through the hole in the windshield because the windshields not there and then they go up and they put it in and away they go well you don’t necessarily have that luxury so you’re gonna have to like spin it and contort it in such a way to get it out of the car and a four-door like this you’ve only got the opening of the door so that can be tricky and I would highly recommend having a buddy when you do that in order to clean out sunroof drains just pull the headlight headliner down this is if you’re unable to like especially the rear drains on these if you’re unable to get to those pull the headliner down disconnect the tubes from the tray assembly itself and then blow compressed air down through them that’s what I’ve done let’s talk a little bit about those windshield leaks that could possibly pop up from time to time so I’m down here at the by the driver’s kick panel here and you’re asking while Eric you were just about talking about windshield leaks well this is many times where the windshield leaks will show up in fact I’ve seen them many times destroy huge boxes and cause electrical issues on top of that so if you’ve got electrical issues only when it rains you might want to see if you have a water leak into this area I’ve seen a couple of vehicles where there were leaks so bad that they completely destroyed the fuse box and once again you’re doing the same thing you’re trying to get to where you can see as much as possible and then you have somebody on the outside or you have some kind of rig on the outside like I say duct tape and a hose can sometimes work to where you can actually see where the water is coming in and it’s not often you see things coming through the bulkhead or firewall you’re basically because because water starts at the top and travels down so it’s usually around the pillars that you see leaks or as I talked about with a Sun roof if you got clogged Sun roof drains they can cause issues that way especially when you’re on turns or something like that I’ve also done a video about when you have a clogged AC drain here up underneath the dash what that can cause is a water leak inside the vehicle that isn’t caused by rain or anything it’s caused by the fact that there’s a buildup of water inside the HVAC system and you’ll go and take a turn and your floor vents which are around here will have water come dumping out of them on your feet sometimes or the passenger just depends on where the where the leak is but those those are things to also watch out for now as I mentioned another area to keep an eye out for is around the Cowell area around where the windshield comes down here now this is the fresh air inlet to the HVAC system I know particularly on second generation Integris there’s a water leak that happens above the blower motor and what it is is it’s just a couple of rubber seals that work with the cow that that black plastic piece that fits underneath the windshield there and those plastic little rubber grommets get old they split once they split water starts to leak right into the where the blower motor is and causes the passenger floorboard to get wet this is an area where water is supposed to be gutted away down through the sides here behind the front fenders but if it gets clogged up with debris or something then obviously water will pull up and come through or as in the case of those Integra’s that I mentioned you there’s the possibility that water can just come straight in that way so looking for things to get clogged up things to get rusted away as you can see with this car new windshields are always suspect sunroof drains or another good suspect also seals around moldings and windows like up around here these are also suspect some have like a drip rail up through here that things can happen with this is just a body scene that’s being covered here but in some vehicles there could be some water intrusion here now and very rare occasions very very rare occasions and this is one that I found only once let’s see if I can find you an area might have to go back to the trunk for this okay we’re back in my leaking area of the

trunk you see the sealer here this is a body sealer seam sealer that is placed there one vehicles manufactured or after it’s been in a collision it should be put back in you can see that it sort of gets smeared around it’s just it’s just a sealer to go between panels you’re not going to weld absolutely everything together some things you’re going to seal just by using a this type of industrial sealant now on rare occasions and this is what I found on brand new vehicles I had to take an entire interior on an ndx apart to try to find this but I found just one little area that wasn’t sealed and as a result water would come right through it those are the nightmare water leaks that take forever to find and you really have to dig for them because usually that’s the one that I found was buried up underneath the dash it was where the actual front of the bulkhead meant meant were the the door attached there was a seal similar to this and like I said there was just a small hole where it wasn’t quite sealed up correctly and as a result water came right in and that was actually really difficult repair because the bodyshop I had to take apart more than I did in order to to fix it but that was a difficult one to track down but the methods the same I used the exact same methods that I showed you here to find that water leaks they can really really suck for lack of a better word they just they suck they suck to find and they suck to repair sometimes sometimes you get lucky I had my fingers crossed and here I was thinking I was all mr. Acura thinking I knew it was taillight gaskets well color me wrong as I said collision damage I don’t know if that’s what set off that rust and that’s one of the reasons I didn’t want to drill into the trunk that way because once you do that once rust gets gets into the metal it sits there it’s there to stay and it’s you know like Neil Young said it never sleeps but I think I’ve covered the finer points of water leak diagnosis in this video I’m sorry I wasn’t able to put together an actual repair for you but that’s going to vary greatly I’ve seen all kinds of water leaks and you know I don’t consider my experience all that vast but but I have seen quite a few and I’ve had to repair quite a few and each and every time it wasn’t necessarily a fun chore as I said you may have to take apart pretty much the whole of your automotive interior in order to even get to a point where you can see where you have a leak that was the case like I said with that new MDX that I found a leak on and that may not always be the case but good well and those sunroof drains yeah those front ones are real easy to get to those back ones aren’t those back ones pretty much mean you’re going to be taking the headliner down and trying to get to those tubes from the inside of the vehicle to make that happen good luck I hope this video was helpful to you and I hope it covered the finer points of finding and fixing water leaks in your vehicle also rarely like my yuk bucket I had a video an eat ECG one called my up bucket I’ll put a link in the description you you may have holes in the floor itself if you’ve got holes in the floor itself water can just come up in that way you’ve got holes in your floor look for a car at shirt replace floor pans everything’s fixable with enough money in time but if you’ve got a vehicle that has holes in the floor I just took mine to the scrapyard is what I did with it it was it was definitely time I mean you can fix it if you wanted if you’re totally in love with a car great but it sits on rare occasion that water can get up into the passenger compartment via the floor if that’s if that’s what you’re dealing with then look near that near the tires and wheels because they’re the things that are going to splash that water up into or onto that floor but normally start high with water leaks and work your way down and as I said collision damage recent collision repair if you’ve recently had a windshield replaced look to those areas or any window if you’ve had rear glass replace if you had your your weird rear glass replaced at any any time and you’ve got a leak back there that’s some place to look hatchbacks those hatch seals around the outside look to those Honda’s especially check those taillight gaskets I hope I’ve covered it links in the description to all the important stuff we’re going to wrap this up anyway I am eric the car guy and if you have automotive questions such as water leaks in your vehicle you’ll find this video along with a ton of other information over there there at the car guide.com that could help you solve your automotive issues to make it easy for you I posted a welcome video that tells you about all the wonderful features we have it air cargo comm to help you with those automotive issues if you wish to connect with me socially I can be found on Google Plus Facebook and Twitter and I close each of my videos with be safe have fun and stay dirty and dry I’ll see

you next time
